Model Racing Form
Introduction:
The MRF is not a totally internet or cyber based group. The "core" of the hobby is the bi-monthly snail mail newsletter called the Model Racing Form. We have a large membership who have been with this organization for over ten years who are not online and are just as important as online members. The majority of MRF racing is conducted via snail mail. Please consider this if you are seeking a total "internet" experience. Success in MRF "fantasy Thoroughbred racing" often does not come easily or quickly. The careful knowledge and study of pedigrees and racing tactics are often needed before one becomes successful. This can and has taken some people years to achieve. If you are looking for instant gratification, this hobby may not be for you. Take the advice of many Members before you. Do not start too big. Do no quickly take on so many runners that you cannot handle them or become frustrated. Many newcomers do not realize the amount of work needed to be successful in this hobby. Start slowly and with a manageable stable. Lastly, the MRF group is full of knowledgeable and helpful people. If after reading our rules you still do not understand something. Please feel free to ask any member, if they cannot help you themselves, they will send you to someone who can.
MRF Rules:
1. You must subscribe to the MRF newsletter in order to participate in MRF activities such as racing, breeding, holding race meets, voting, consigning or buying horses from our Auctions.
2. The MRF strives to achieve as much realism with live Thoroughbred racing as possible and we follow guidelines set the by real Jockey Club.
3. All model horses involved with the MRF age every year, in doing so they eventually retire, get pentioned and even die.
4. We don't use real horses that have died as parents of models, i.e. no 1998 foals sired by Man O' War or out of Go For Wand. You may use a dead horse before he/she died, to create older "back dated" foals as long as the horse was actively breeding during those years, and for mares had an open year. 5. If live/real horses are used for parents the mare must have an open year (no foal) and be registered with our RMR (Real Mare Registry). Any foals created out of live mares foaled from 1990 on MUST have an RMR number.
6. Please realize that if you plan to use a real mare for the dam of your model a MRF Member may already be using that year, and have it registered. This means you will NOT be able to use that year.
7. If live parents are used for a model horse they must fit real life time constraints on the real horse, i.e. you cannot use a sire/dam BEFORE he/she entered stud while he/she ws still racing, not a pentioned horse, nor a dead horse. You cannot use a real horse for a sire/dam if they are sterile in real life (i.e. Cigar) or if they died before they had a chance to produce a foal (i.e. Ruffian, Go For Wand, Swale, etc.).
8. If using live parents you cannot take it upon yourself to "send" them overseas if the the horse has never left the country, ie.e you CANNOT send Genuine Risk over to England to breed to say Sadlers Wells, as Genuine Risk has never left the country in real life, nor has Sadlers Wells left England for the USA.
9. We suggest using MODEL parents as much as possible. This eliminates problems of finding open years, pedigree researching and registereing many horses with our RMR. Many members are willing to give/sell you already established MRF model racehorses, or allow you to use open years on their dam listings.
10. All broodmares have ONE foal a year (with the very RARE exception of twins).
11. No fantasy breedings can be created by the use of embryo transfer or artificial insemination for MRF Thoroughbred racing.
12. We do not race breeding stock.
13. When bringing already established breeding stock into the MRF group we expect that the model pedigree will eventually trace to real horses that fit our breeding requirements in rules 6 through 14. It is perfectly acceptable within this hobby to change an incorrect pedigree to meet realistic standards. It is also responsible to print the corrected pedigree in the MRF, especially if the horse in question has foals.
14. You cannot use a Member's model sire/dam for the parents of your horse without their permission.
15. All your horses must have their names registered with our ONR - Official Name Registry.
16. Please be advised that a current MRF member may already be usin a name and you may HAVE TO CHANGE or adjust slightly the names of some of your models.
17. You cannot give your model Thoroughbred "obvious" live thoroughbred names (i.e. Triple Crown winners, Eclipse Award winners, famous sires/dams, etc.). If your model was named first (BEFORE the real horse came along) you may keep the name.
18. We DON'T accept race records from other clubs/organizations. The MRF accepts past club records from these 1980's clubs: BHS, IMTBR, MTAR, SAA, AA, TOBA, NAMT.
19. If you have a horse with a race record from another club/organization you can list it on your sire & damlisting of you state it is from another club, i.e. "Lucky Horse was a G1 SW in NON-MRF racing with the Iowa Racing Association." No fictional records may be listed. If the Non-MRF racing accurred at your own track, the records CANNOT be used.
20. If the sire/dam or both of your MRF racer was a NON-MRF SW/CH you MUST state that on your race card.
21. You cannot put NON-MRF (or fictional) race records for your current MRF racer on race cards.
22. You can only enter a horse in one race a day. Give at LEAST 5 days between races.
23. You cannot enter your own horse at your own track. You may not enter a horse you train for someone else at your own track.
24. You cannot be the jockey on your own horse.
25. If you are sending out a horse to another race BEFORE you have the results back from his/her last race you MUST list the date & name of race, and inform the next Track Steward of the pending race.
26. More detailed information on MRF rules can be learning by reading "Track Guidelines." (To be added when Publication is completed).
27. You must be an MRF member for one year before you open your own track. First year in operation can only hold maiden/allowance races.
28. You must operate the race track for 3 years before you can run graded races. Two years in operation to be able to host IOR graded races.
29. It is common courtesy to disperse your stock (or give it back to the breeder) if you decide to leave the hobby.
30. It is standard procedure to send an SASE (self addressed stamped envelope) when snail mailing another member regarding breedings.
31. When race cards are sent to you in error you will return them to their proper owners in a timely fashion. If no return address is on card, an ad should be placed in the MRF.
32. If you must cancel a racemeet you will return all cards/fees within two weeks, barring natural disaster.
33. Items that have been approved (voted on) by a majority of the membership vote are to be considered rules.
34. Two people may share an MRF subscription, but the second person must be listed for MRF records. Sharers must live near one another.
35. All racemeets must be advertised in the MRF for all MRF members to see, barring the occasional missed deadline.
36. Portrait Models of live/real horses are not allowed unless you are actually the OWNER of the horse in question. Portrait Models created before the adoption of the MRF Rules will live out their careers/lives in accordance to the real horse's death/pension dates.
